Ever heard of polyester? If you are not familiar, you can actually find this material in your clothes. Usually, the clothing brand tag contains details of the material composition. There you can find the levels of polyester in your clothes. Not only in clothing, this material is also used to make sofas, blankets, bed linen, carpets, and macrame cords. However, what exactly is polyester?
Polyester is a fabric made by humans. Polyester material is not derived from nature, but through a chemical process. The word polyester itself comes from two words, polymer which means plastic and ester which is the result of mixing petroleum, alcohol, and carboxylic acid. Interesting right? Not only that. Polyester material has various types. What are the types?
This polyester material has three main types that are often used in everyday life. The three types are as follows:
1. PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) Type of polyester PET material is the most popular polyester used. Not only used as clothing, PET is also used as a base for mineral water bottles, soft drinks, and other direct disposable drinking bottles.
PET can be recycled. PET is produced by mixing ethylene glycol with terephtalic acid or methyl ester and antimony catalyst. Antimony catalyst helps chemical reactions that produce polyester. To become a fabric, polyester material must be vacuumed at high temperatures in a vacuum.
2. PCDT (poly-1, 4-cyclohexylene-dimethylene) This type of PCDT polyester material is more elastic than polyester PET material. Therefore, PCDT is often used as a basic material for textile fabrics for window curtains and furniture covers. PCDT is made from a mixture of acid with other chemicals, including poly-1,4-cyclohexylene-dimethylene itself.
3. Synthetic thread Synthetic yarn can also be used to create polyester fabrics. Examples of synthetic yarns are filament yarns. This yarn goes through such a process and produces polyster fabric. Well, the polyester fabric can look similar to fabrics derived from natural materials, you know! However, still polyester fabrics come from chemicals.
Excess Polyester Material
Although it comes from chemicals, it does not mean this non-natural material is bad. Polyester has a variety of advantages that really help your life. What are the advantages? Come, see below!
1. Durable and resistant to germs This material has high durability so you can use it for a long time. Plus, polyester is also resistant to bacteria, germs, and other chemicals so you also don't need to worry about your polyether being damaged.
2. Not easy to wrinkle There are some fabrics that are easily wrinkled even though they have been ironed many times. Another case with polyester. This material is not easy to wrinkle even if you bend or use it all day. In addition, polyester is also not easy to shrink or stretchy, you know. Therefore, this type of material will make clothes or other fabric products still have a perfect shape.
3. Quick dry and waterproof If your polyesthes clothes or cloth are washed, you don't have to wait too long to dry. Because the polyester material dries quickly and is waterproof. This happens because of its ability to absorb heat. Therefore, some outdoor items, such as camping tents, parka jackets, and umbrellas, use polyester as the main material. Polyester material is suitable for use in cold temperatures because it absorbs heat easily.
